Do you not have COVID-19 if you can hold your breath for 10 seconds?
The ability to hold your breath for 10 seconds without coughing or feeling discomfort is not a reliable way to determine whether or not you have COVID-19. This is a myth that circulated at the beginning of the pandemic, but it has no basis in science.
The most common symptoms of COVID-19 are fever, dry cough, and fatigue. Other symptoms may include shortness of breath, muscle or joint pain, sore throat, headache, loss of taste or smell, and more. Some people develop severe symptoms such as difficulty breathing, chest pain or pressure, loss of speech or mobility, and confusion.
The 10-second breath-hold is not an effective test and may provide false reassurance. Many people with COVID-19 can hold their breath normally, especially in the early stages of the disease or with mild infections. COVID-19 can manifest itself in different ways in different people. Some people are asymptomatic, while others may develop severe symptoms.
The ability to hold your breath for 10 seconds without coughing or feeling discomfort is not a reliable way to determine if you have COVID-19. Accurate diagnosis requires PCR tests, antigen tests, or antibody tests. If you have symptoms that could indicate COVID-19, or if you have been exposed to someone with the virus, it is important to get tested and follow the guidance of health authorities.
