Are grass spikes dangerous to humans?
Grass spikes can be dangerous to both animals and people. Grass spikes, also known as foxtails in English, are the seed heads of certain grass species that mature in summer and early fall. They have sharp, arrow-shaped tips and can easily snag on clothing and skin.
Grass spikes can penetrate people's skin, especially during activities such as walking or gardening. This can lead to painful wounds and infections. If grass spikes get into the eyes or airways, they can cause irritation, inflammation and infection. This can be extremely dangerous and require medical attention.
Stay away from areas with a lot of grass during the risk periods. Wear long sleeves and pants when walking through grassy areas. Keep your lawn and gardens well maintained to minimize grass spike growth wherever you walk.
If a grass spike gets into the skin, it is important to remove it as quickly as possible and completely. In case of deep penetration or infection, medical attention is necessary.
