Sprained ankle
Everyone sprains their ankle sometimes. Usually you can just continue walking, but sometimes that is no longer possible. When is something serious going on?
With an ankle sprain, the foot will suddenly turn inwards. This is usually quite painful because the ligaments on the outside of the ankle are stretched. Sometimes the ligaments can tear completely or partially. Then a painful swelling the size of an egg will develop and the ankle may swell.
In such cases it is important to immediately elevate the ankle and cool it with ice cubes in a plastic bag or an ice pack. Also try immediately to see if you can still walk. If you succeed, it is best to continue immediately because steps will bring about recovery and then the sprained ankle or torn ligament can heal on its own.
A visit to the doctor is only recommended if you cannot take 4 steps without support or if the pain and/or swelling have not reduced after 4 or 5 days.
